Hastelloy B2 round tubing is known for its subpar thermal stability at moderate temperatures. Consequently, it becomes vulnerable to stress corrosion, and this can even cause equipment made from the alloy to crack during production processes such as hot rolling, or in the manufacturing of Hastelloy B-2 alloy equipment where overall heat treatment is required after welding.
Currently, the standard method for testing the intergranular corrosion resistance of Hastelloy B-2 alloy is through the atmospheric boiling hydrochloric acid method, which is recognized and used by countries worldwide. However, it has been discovered that this method is not sensitive enough to the intergranular corrosion tendency of Hastelloy B-2 alloy because of its resistance to hydrochloric acid corrosion. Further research on this alloy has shown that its corrosion resistance is not only dependent on its chemical composition but also on the thermal processing control process employed during its production. Improper control of this process can lead to several undesirable outcomes, including an increase in grain size and the precipitation of high-Mo σ phase between the grains. Such a situation will significantly reduce the Hastelloy B-2 alloy's intergranular corrosion resistance. This is evident in the high-temperature hydrochloric acid test, where the coarse-grained plate and the normal plate experience roughly twice the grain boundary erosion depth.
